The text has several calculator … This is an interesting point. by Sergei Treil From the Introduction: The title of the book sounds a bit mysterious. The text subdivides the topics into appropriate and helpful smaller reading sections. I found the text offensive because of the condescending nature of some comments, irrelevant humour, inside jokes, and treatment of the reader in a non-professional way. Two proofs are given (pp.137-142, pp.149-163) for the existence of Jordan form over the complex field. For books that are intended for an audience that is before the University level please see K-12 mathematics. The flow is exactly as I would follow. Kindle Edition. Exercises are abundant, and full solutions follow each group of exercises. This textbook provides a rigorous introduction to linear algebra in addition to material suitable for a more advanced course while emphasizing the subject’s interactions with other topics in mathematics such as calculus and geometry. In particular, the theory of … Available Formats: Hardcover eBook Softcover. I would reccommend the text to teachers who want a rigorous complete Algebra 1 … Paperback. Since according to the Open Textbook project, one can use any parts of the book, according to their needs, then I believe the book provides more than enough to choose from and covers ideas of the subject exactly as needed for our College Algebra class. While it does not presuppose an earlier course, many connections between linear algebra and under graduate analysis are worked into the discussion, making it best suited for students who have completed the calculus sequence. This text is designed to teach the concepts and techniques of basic linear algebra as a rigorous mathematical subject. Diane sent me the following question, which I thought I would post to solicit more suggestions: I teach in Northbridge, MA and we are in the middle of a textbook debate. If need be, I could attached more detailed comments – however they would cover every chapter of the 700+ pages of this eBook.

This textbook is meant to be a mathematically complete and rigorous introduction to abstract linear algebra for undergraduates, possibly even first year students, specializing in mathematics. The only problem I had that when I downloaded the .pdf file to my Mac it was not complete. and students will get good level of practice once they tackle these. The textbook has a very good consistency in terms of terminolgy and Framework. The book’s organization makes it easy to adapt to a variety of course syllabi. The numerous footnotes, however, are distracting. One item which could better be addressed are some of the examples - many times Sasquatch is referenced. The diagrams and figures were adequate. I did not see the usefulness or helpfulness of some of the humor and unnecessary comments made in the presentation of the material. The content is accurate and unbiased. It’s easy-to-follow and all topics are well organized. Do the authors' students largely not get it? The text book covered all the topics in college algebra.

The core material and most problems are purely mathematical. I did not observe any grammatical errors, but I do not consider myself an appropriate judge of this.

How often do you find a basic text written by a world-class expert? I found the flow and organization clear. The book is an undergraduate textbook on abstract algebra, beginning with the theories of rings and groups. So far, my list looks something like this: (I chose many books from Howers's great thread on pure math textbooks, but changed some of the higher level math textbooks). I did not see specific coverage of scientific notation, and the text seemed weak in applications, particularly for lower level topics, like linear and quadratic functions, which are quite important for a college algebra class. Such Examples and exercises primarily use imperial units; I would prefer to have a better balance of imperial and metric questions.

Reviewed by Milan Frankl, MBA, PhD, Professor of Business, University Canada West on 10/9/13, The textbook does not cover all the material one would need to address in college algebra, notably the trigonometric functions are absent – even though they appear in the content. This book is intended for the first course in linear algebra, the level is not rigorous, but its pedagogical approach makes it perfect to introduce this subject. You can easily break up some sections to different modules during the course. Bonus: I believe Linear Algebra Done Right is Springer's best seller across all the mathematics textbooks that it sells (saw this in an old excel sheet shared by springer with a publisher). This particular calculator may not be in use in the near future, while other less-costly options may be utilized. The extensive coverage of Systems of Equations and Matrices can not be really squeezed into a one semester College Algebra class, but a 1st Linear Algebra class could definitely take that chapter and spend almost a month on it. I did not find anything culturally insensitive or offensive in the text. Moreover, formalism in theorem proving is absent or... The authors describe their approach as "Functions First," believing introducing functions first will help students understand new concepts more completely. Only some problems and asides touch cultural issues at all. The text book covered all the topics in college algebra. Normally I would recommend those easier Jacobs/Sullivan books to go along with Gelfand, because he can leave out things in the reading. My recoomendations to the authorsn is to add a review section to each chapter with different questions as a review for that chapter. The only two sub topics which were not in detailed is Linear Functions and Quadratic Functions. Related. I was surprised at the number of problems in the exercise sets. I enjoyed some of the cultural references in the text. Pretty much all of Gelfand's are as rigorous as one can get at that kind of level. Some of the solutions provided for example problems are rather verbose and potentially confusing for students depending on their experience level. Is their education system sufficiently different from ours that they get the sort of geeky audience who would appreciate this book? The information and content of the text is relevant and will remain so. . There also seemed to be local/geographical references which may be puzzling for many students. The text consists mostly of exercises (more than 50 in each chapter) with little associated theory supporting the solution process. This readable yet rigorous textbook contains a complete course in the linear algebra and related mathematics that students need to know to get to grips with learning from data. Linear algebra study material recommendation. Since the material is foundational for many subsequent subjects, there is no danger of the mathematics losing relevance. Broadening the sources of data would improve the book. Again, some students may find some of the footnotes condescending. Chapters 7,8, and 9 are unnecessary for our precalculus course; they are covered in other introductory math/macm courses. Am using this book in two of my classes and my students love the book. It is a very useful way to review or learn about recurring formulas without flipping back through physical pages constantly or bookmarking several sections. After using the textbook for three courses, I have found no significant errors in the book. There are some important issues with regard to intended audience, which will be dealt with more substantially in a later question, but in summary this text seems to be targeted to mathies in spirit (not in difficulty) despite the fact that in our system such people will have covered this material before university and so will not be in our precalculus classes.
